Friday, 20 September
On Friday, 20 September, the students of Oasis Excellence Academy embarked on an unforgettable excursion to the majestic Augrabies Falls. This trip wasn’t just about fun—it was a chance for our students to immerse themselves in nature, experience the power of the falls, and learn about South Africa’s diverse natural environment.
The day began with excitement as our learners boarded the bus, eagerly anticipating the adventure ahead. Upon arrival, the breathtaking sight of the Augrabies Falls left everyone in awe. Known as the "place of great noise" in the Khoi language, the falls lived up to its name with thunderous water crashing down from 56 meters high.
Students were guided along safe viewing platforms, learning about the geology and natural history of the area. The teaching staff, along with expert guides, explained how the Orange River carved its way through the ancient rock, creating one of South Africa's most awe-inspiring natural wonders.
Aside from the falls, the group explored the unique flora and fauna of the Augrabies Falls National Park. Our learners discovered fascinating plant species adapted to the harsh, semi-desert environment, as well as animals like klipspringers and dassies that call the area home.
A highlight of the day was a hands-on environmental lesson. Students were divided into small groups to observe and document the park’s ecosystem, learning the importance of conservation and how even small actions can protect our natural heritage.
After a packed lunch under the shade of the trees, students shared their reflections on the day's experiences. Many expressed how seeing the falls and learning about the surrounding environment deepened their appreciation for nature. It was more than just a day out—it was an extension of what we teach at Oasis Excellence Academy: the value of our natural world and our responsibility to protect it.
As we headed back to Kuruman, the chatter on the bus was filled with excitement and memories of an enriching day spent learning beyond the classroom. This excursion was not only fun but a meaningful experience that broadened our students’ understanding of the environment.
We’re proud to offer opportunities like this that combine education with real-world experiences, shaping our students into responsible, environmentally aware citizens.
